Apple has made a big song and dance about the latest iteration of its camera inside the iPhone 6S, but new tests show it is being outperformed by a number of flagship Android handsets from Sony, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Google itself.

The rear camera in the iPhone 6S includes a number of new technologies designed to improve photographs and videos taken with the devices, and with a 12 megapixel camera that is able to shoot full 4K video no-one will be disappointed with how it performs.

Nonetheless, according to recent tests by DxOMark, the iPhone no longer holds the crown for the best camera.

After testing for exposure, contrast, autofocus, texture, noise, artifacts and flash, DxOMark gave the latest iPhone a rating of “82”, the same score it gave its predecessor.

Whilst a retaining a very good score, the iPhone is now beaten by a variety of flagship Android phones, which have all gone to great lengths to improve their photography capabilities in recent years. Indeed, the Motorola Moto X Style, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and LG G4 all beat the iPhone 6S with scores of 83, while the Google Nexus 6P scored and 84, and the Samsung S6 Edge 86.

However, beating them all is the Sony Xperia Z5 with its whopping 23 megapixel camera that shoots 5520x4120px stills and can shoot 4K (2160P) video at 30fps, 1080p/60fps, or 720p/120fps – which scored an extremely impressive 87 in the DxOMark tests.
