MegaUpload Goes Down As DNS “Seized”

MegaUpload may be one of the harbingers of doom according to the entertainment industry, with the site often found alongside the Pirate Bay on the shoot-to-kill lists from the MPAA and RIAA, but it is also on of the top 100 most popular websites in the world according to Alexa – so people notice when it goes down. That the timing of its downtime coincided with the second round of seizures by the FBI in their “Save Our Sites” campaign, meant that a lot of people thought its time had come.

It appears, however, that the fiasco is simply down to a disagreement with their domain registrar, which for some reason had changed MegaUpload’s nameservers to ns1.badwhoisshutdown.com (and others) rather than to point to MegaUpload’s own servers. There is speculation that this may have been done as the registrar believed the WHOIS data entered by MegaUpload to be false, but we’ve seen no confirmation of this either way.

Whatever the cause for the disagreement though, the nameservers have now been changed back to ns1.megaupload.com (and others) and MegaUpload should be back in business for most users. DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to propogate through the internet, so some users may still be having issues getting to or downloading from MegaUpload – but these issues will be resolved in the coming hours.
