During Google I/O, Mercedes Benz demonstrated the integration of Google Maps, Local Search and more displayed in the dashboard of the SL550 Roadster. The SL is one of the first Mercedes vehicles to add the Google extras. Mercedes plans to introduce and integrate the features further in their DriveStyle app.
The applications work much like they do on smartphones or other devices. The Local Search allows drivers to type in a term such as “fast food” to begin a local search. The app will then show a list of places that fit the search term. Each place can then be selected as a navigation point. The Street View app allows drivers to enjoy a 360 degree view of any location covered by Google. The Traffic app uses what Google currently has implemented and Mercedes was unclear whether it would be replacing or supplementing what it already has in its current traffic data system.
Another neat feature is called Radar View and allows drivers to expediently find nightlife by showing the concentration of clubs, bars and restaurants in a particular city. The feature uses Google data to compile its information.
Using the Google integration features requires the Mercedes-Benz’s DriveStyle app installed on an iPhone and connected to the car with the Drive Kit Plus, also by Mercedes-Benz. Once the two are connected, the driver can use the Mercedes electronic interface, called Comand, to search and control the Google content. Currently, the iPhone 4 is the only phone that this all works on, however, Mercedes does expect to have it available for the iPhone 5. There is no word on whether they intend to add it for other smartphones such as Android or Windows OS.
The DriveStyle app also allows drivers to use social media and audio through the phones and the car’s Comand system. Google Maps will be added to a new Places menu and be accessible there.
Reviews state that the Comand system locks the driver out of major functions when the vehicle is moving. Presumably most of the navigation features continue to work when the vehicle is in motion.
