Fast-Tracking HD Camera to Revolutionise Sports Coverage

Researchers at the University of Tokyo’s Ishikawa Oku Lab have developed a new camera technology to track fast-moving objects, which could revolutionise the way sports such as football and tennis will be recorded.

The camera technology uses a group of lenses and two small mirrors that do the panning and tilting rather than needing to move the whole camera. Rather than than rely on a camera man to operate the camera, the technology also makes use of an advanced image tracking system to make sure the object remains in the centre of the screen.

The researchers have found great success under lab conditions, and have now moved into the second phase of “real-world” testing, with an aim of making the technology ready for broadcast in just two years. You can see a demo of the tech in the video above.
