Rdio has spent the better part of three months hammering out deals with record labels licensing agencies to let them open their service in Europe, and today the music streaming services has launched in the UK and France.
Rdio has had the launch advantage in the US, beating Spotify to the country by over a year, but here in the UK Spotify has been going from strength to strength since 2008 – a long time to get mindshare amongst the populace. Their integration with Facebook and launching of apps within Spotify itself has only added to that as well, so Rdio has got a lot of catching up to do.
I’m not quite sure how Rdio is expecting to make up that lead, however, as they are launching with exactly the same pricing model of £4.99/mo for web-only streaming and £9.99/mo for any device (including mobile). Unlike Spotify, Rdio doesn’t have a limited free option supported by ads either – so it is going to be an uphill battle.
