Japanese electronics giant Sony unveiled a prototype virtual reality (VR) headset designed to be used with the PlayStation 4 during a talk at today’s Game Developers Conference.
Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida demonstrated the headset, telling attendees that the company had been developing the headset for the last three years, and they were finally ready to show the world what their vision of a VR gaming future. he said:
“We will continue to work on this to improve it, but we believe it’s a good representation of how PlayStation will deliver VR.”
The headset has been codenamed Project Morpheus and features a 1080p display with a 90-degree field of view. Gamers’ movements are tracked using sensors built into the device and through a connection with a PS4 camera, and they can interact with the virtual world with gestures using the PS4 Move Controller
The company did not share any details about an estimated release date or pricing, although it is likely that they are looking to compete with the soon to be released Oculus Rift headset from Oculus VR, that is already taking pre-orders.
