Rubik's Cube

40th birthday of Rubik’s Cube celebrated in Google doodle

Rubik's Cube

The Rubik’s Cube was the puzzling accessory of the 1980s, and Google is celebrating 40 years since its invention with a fully working example as today’s Google doodle.

Hungarian architect Erno Rubik invented the colourful 3x3x3 cube in 1974, but it was not released globally until 1980, where it quickly gained popularity as a mass-market puzzle and later turned into a fashion accessory that defined the decade.

By 2009, more than 350 million Rubik’s Cubes had been sold worldwide, with the iconic design appearing on everything from t-shirts to bedside lamps.

The puzzle element of the cube still confuses many, but the world record for a human completing it currently stands at 5.55 seconds by Mats Valk.
