Bitcoin has been having a huge year. The value of Bitcoin has grown more than nine times since January 2020 to be worth more than £43,000 today, and with big-name supporters like Elon Musk on-board, it seems we may be seeing more places accept the world’s most famous cryptocurrency soon.
You may be waiting a while before Bitcoin is accepted in your local village pub or coffee shop, but you can already buy all manner of items with Bitcoin right now – here are some of the strangest:
Luxury cars
Tesla-founder Elon Musk is a big fan of Bitcoin and so it is little surprise that you are able to by Tesla electric cars using the cryptocurrency, but a number of luxury car dealerships now also accept the currency, so whether you want a 1965 Aston Martin or a brand new Lamborghini, you can probably pay in Bitcoin.
Luxury watches
Like cars, watches are often considered status symbols and with the price of some watches going into the tens of thousands there is little surprise that if someone wants to pay in Bitcoin then the dealer will find a way. Whether you are looking for a Rolex Bitcoin store Asia or a Lange & Söhne Bitcoin dealer in the US, you should have no problem sourcing such luxury items today.
Real estate
The price of Bitcoin is notoriously unpredictable, but people are already buying and selling their biggest assets – their homes – with the digital currency. 2017 saw a £350,000 house in Essex become the first house sold entirely for Bitcoin, and since then entire marketplaces have sprung up for people looking to buy and sell property over the blockchain.
Anything on Amazon
Amazon may be known as the big warehouse in the sky, selling almost every (legal) thing under the sun, but it does not yet accept every form of payment – and currently does not accept Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency. However, a company called Purse has stepped in to fix this by letting people buy anything at all on Amazon.com using Bitcoin and giving people a discount too.
