Getting started in your photography career: 4 things you’re going to need

Are you considering a career in photography? Whether you’re leaving school soon or you’re considering a change of vocation, a career in photography is both rewarding yet challenging. Ideal for creative personalities and those looking to develop their creativity skills, photography is a career that can take you in so many different directions, with each one just as rewarding as the next.

But, what do you need to get started in this worthwhile profession? Of course you’re going to need some stellar equipment in order to catch those amazing moments – check out C.R. Kennedy for the latest in camera equipment – but what else does it take?  Read on for 4 things you’re going to need to build your photography career.

Knowledge

If you’re currently in education or you’re heading to college then choosing a photography course is the perfect way to kickstart your photography career. Having the right knowledge will ensure you have a thorough understanding of the different kinds of photography out there, which in turn will help you chose your own style. If you’re already in work, then consider taking a photography class or head back to college as a mature student and enjoy the practical learning aspect of your course. You’ll have chance to practice with different equipment, or get used to your own, meet fellow students and develop a passion for photography through learning.

A focus

There are many different specialities when it comes to photography. From weddings and family event photography, to fine art, wildlife, commercial photography, aerial photography, even school photos, events and so many more. It can be difficult to choose, so make sure you conduct plenty of research into your focus. You’ll be able to identify your target market and advertise with them in mind.

The time to practice

You know what they say, practice makes perfect. And in the photography world, practicing is what will help you to hone your craft and stand apart from the competitors in your field. If you’re a complete novice, then offer a free photoshoot to friends or family members, if commercial photography is your niche then don’t be afraid to approach local businesses and offer to take some promotional photographs either for free or for a reduced fee. If wildlife or nature photography is your thing, then never miss an opportunity and take your camera everywhere with you.

An online presence

You won’t get very far without an online presence. However, it is the easiest way for potential clients to see your greatest work and know whether or not you’re right for them. The most important thing you’re going to need on your website is of course, your online portfolio. This is your time to shine and showcase your work, so don’t hold back. You’ll also need to create a presence on social media, including Instagram and Facebook. These are great ways for potential clients to reach out to you and connect. Showcasing your work online means that people from all over the world can see your talents and this will of course lead to work and new commissions.
