The automotive industry has certainly changed a lot over the past decade. Thanks to advancements in technology, the industry has managed to create safer, more reliable vehicles. While a large focus has been placed upon the car industry, trucks haven’t missed out on the benefits of new tech. There are a number of exciting technology advancements that are set to revolutionise truck driver safety.

The driver-less truck

You’ve likely heard of driver-less cars now that they are set to be trialled on the UK’s roads in early 2015. However, did you know that there are plans for a driver-less truck too? Mercedes-Benz have been the latest company to hit the news with plans to roll out driver-less trucks by 2025. The trucks will enable a Highway Pilot to take over while the driver focuses on other tasks. This could really help to enhance driver safety.

There has been a lot of concern in the driving world surrounding driver-less vehicles and how safe they are. However, when you look into the potential benefits, you soon realise just how much of a difference they could make in terms of driver safety.

Precise steering technology

Volvo have created Dynamic Steering which has helped revolutionise truck steering. As featured by the Volvo Group, the idea behind the technology was actually created nine years ago. However, it was late 2013 when the technology was finally fitted into Volvo trucks. The technology uses software which tells the truck which way it should be steering based upon the driver’s environment. It significantly enhances safety and also helps to improve the driver’s experience.

Clever sensors

These days truck drivers and freight companies can invest in numerous sensors and monitors. By far one of the most common safety problems truck drivers face is reversing.
Obstacle detection systems such as the ones offered by Brigade Electronics can alert the driver to potential problems. They sound an alarm if the truck gets too close to any objects such as a wall, person or car. There are also excellent monitors you can invest in which provide camera angles at either side, or at the rear of the truck. This helps improve visibility and eliminates any blind spots you may have.

Enhanced stability technology

Another one of Volvo’s creations, enhanced stability technology provides more efficiency to emergency braking. It helps to reduce the risk of the truck rolling over and of the driver losing control of the vehicle. The technology identifies any potential hazards and helps to keep the truck under control, even in winter conditions.

These are just some of the recent technological advancements that have helped to revolutionise truck driver safety. The driver-less trucks might be a long way off, but their development has certainly caused some excitement within the industry. New technology is being constantly introduced onto the market. Truck drivers can expect to benefit from much safer driving conditions as technology further advances. If you are looking to enhance the safety of your truck today, you might want to take a look at the various safety monitors available.
