Tips for a better video call experience

Video calling services and apps allow you to see your friends and loved ones face to face at a distance. Don’t let a spotty connection or bad lighting ruin your call. Whether you use Skype or FaceTime, make the most of your video chats by using these handy tips.

1. Be mindful of your light source’s position

Have you ever found yourself speaking to a shadow on a video call? Adequate lighting is essential for the quality of the phone call. If you’re phoning someone in the evening, turn on all the lights to ensure that the room’s bright enough to make your features stand out. The direction and positioning of the light source is also important. If you place your main light source behind you, only your silhouette will show up. Try to place your primary light source behind the camera instead, leaving you as the main subject illuminated.

2. Boost your signal

A strong network connection is essential for video calls. Avoid delays, stuttering effects, and pixelated pictures. Before you place your call, make sure you’re getting a strong Wi-Fi signal, switching rooms if necessary. When using your mobile phone, try to connect to a strong 4G network from Nokia Networks or the local provider, and be sure that you have enough data to place your call.

3. Put a stop to background apps

Along these same lines, you can boost your device’s running speed by shutting down unnecessary applications before you place a call. Games and video streaming apps in particular can use up a ton of space, slowing down your device. Close your background apps and you should have a smoother call.

4.Sit closer to the microphone

Are you having problems with the audio during your call? Simply moving a bit closer to the microphone on your device could make it easier for your contact to hear you. If you sit too far away, it can lead to an echo effect. At the same time, speaking right into the microphone could muffle your sound.

5. Wear solid colours

Black and white stripes, distracting patterns, and bright colours can all distract your viewer and even hurt their eyes due to camera effects. Try sticking to neutral, solid colours, particularly if you’re taking part in a business meeting.

6. Eliminate echo effects

While sitting closer to the headphones can make it easier for your contact to hear you speak, you can improve the audio effects on your end by wearing headphones during the call. These can cancel out echo effects. Another way to combat the echo effect is by muting your microphone and moving electronic devices away from speakers.

An increasing number of businesses are using video conferencing features, so it’s a good idea to find out what works best for your device. By boosting network speeds, being mindful of your background and lighting, and adjusting the audio features when necessary, you can enjoy more productive video phone calls.
