People have been taking photographs since the 1820s, with people taking more and more each year in an exponential growth pattern with about 380 billion taken last year alone. That is a lot of snapping, and Facebook hosts a large proportion of them online.
Facebook took Flickr’s crown as the world’s largest photo host a while ago, and has now left the dedicated photo-sharing site in the dust and hosts upwards of 140 billion photos, with a further 70 billion expected to be added next year according 1000 Memories. Facebook’s rapid growth alongside the change to digital photography and the rapid growth in numbers of photos taken in general, Facebook now hosts an estimated 4% of all photos ever taken, with that percentage increasing year on year.
