Rovio‘s Angry Birds has dominated the mobile gaming charts for years now, and has managed to maintain its widespread cult following, with its userbase expanding nearly as fast as the smartphone market – with the game having been downloaded over 500 million times. There is even a film being developed about the plight of the animals, and a cookbook of “Bad Piggies’ Recipes About Eggs” – and all of this with almost no marketing.
Angry Birds has added 100,000 downloads in the last couple of weeks alone – with the game seeing 130 million monthly users, 30 million daily active users, and 300 million minutes of game play each day last time the company gave a public update in mid-October.
Rovio now has the userbase – but only time will tell if the company can make Angry Birds a brand as successful as Mario or Sonic The Hedgehog – something they have said they are looking to do.
