For those still looking for a present for their gadget-loving family member – Currys, Dixons, and PC World look to be offering the BlackBerry PlayBook 7″ tablet at a steal for £169. It may not quite be the £89 TouchPad firesale, but it is pretty close – with the PlayBook retailing at £499 just a few months ago.
The PlayBook is billed as an iPad rival comes packing a dual core 1GHz TI OMAP4430 CPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage, a 7″ 1024x600px capacitive touchscreen, HD front and rear cameras, Wi-Fi, microUSB, microHDMI and Blackberry Tablet OS that is soon to have support for Android apps. Or you can root it and get access to the Android Market and Google Apps right now.
The PlayBook is now competing on price with the Kindle Fire and Nook – both of which aren’t even available on this side of the pond yet. The Playbook also beats both on spec, and isn’t linked to a specific content store. The device may have been a hard sell at £500 – but at £169 it is an absolute bargain – and a great last minute present for a loved one or a way to spend your Christmas money. And if £169 wasn’t good enough – Currys are also throwing in a £50 voucher for you to spend at a later time. Awesome.
…and now others are matching the £169 for the 16GB PlayBook, and also selling the 32GB PlayBook for £199.
(If you’d prefer a true Android device – check out the HTC Flyer for £199)
UPDATE: The 64GB PlayBook is now down to £249 from various stores – bargain!
