Amazon workers at increased risk of physical and mental illness

AmazonEmployees at Amazon’s huge delivery warehouses are at increased risk of suffering “mental and physical illness” during night shifts where staff are expected to collect nearly two orders per minute.

The worrying words come from Professor Michael Marmot, who was show videos of working conditions at Amazon warehouses made secretly for an upcoming BBC Panorama investigation.

Amazon has denied that it puts too much pressure on its workforce and its regular safety inspections had not raised any issues about worker health, but Marmot has called for more “balance” during a worker’s shift.

Amazon is the world’s leading ecommerce website, with the company preparing to bring on a further 15,000 additional staff to assist with the Christmas sales rush.
