How technology has changed project management

Technology has served to have a significant impact on all sorts of different areas of life. Without a doubt, one of these is project management. In fact, the ways in which we run projects now would have seemed impossibly alien just a couple of decades ago. So, let’s have a closer look at the ways in which this has occurred.

Better communication

First of all, there have been advances in communication like never before. All good projects have a number of people pulling together to achieve common goals, and they need to be able to speak to each other well in order to do this. As well as the plethora of video conferencing software available these days, there are also many project management tools that can help encourage better collaboration between team members. Email is still a dominant form of communication, but collaboration tools are starting to challenge this.

Improved planning tools

The best projects are the ones that have been planned out properly – meaning that each and every detail has been thought through. We have just mentioned the importance of collaboration project management software. Tech has also given us better access to systems such as a Gantt chart that gives everybody the opportunity to see their own individual set of deadlines, as well as the work that is left to be done on the project as a whole.

Real-time updates and reporting

Of course, a good plan is one of the cornerstones of a successful project. At the same time, you also need to be able to track it as it is going along to ensure that everything is going as smoothly as you would like it to. The presence of real-time updates and reporting helps to ensure this face. Actually, a lot of this is also available in the project management tools that we have already discussed. People are free to make edits and notes explaining exactly what they have done along the way. A lot of these tools are now cloud-based, which means that people can access them remotely with ease, no matter where they are in the world.

Decentralized teams

The idea of working from various remote locations has been one that has been in the process of being normalized over the past few years, but this has accelerated enormously in 2020 and 2021 for obvious reasons. Before, the idea of people working from all over the country or even the world would have been seen as entirely alien, but it looks like it is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. This has only been possible thanks to the rapid advancements in communication software that have been made available in the past few years.

Technology is likely to continue to shift project management and what we think of it, but these are just some of the ways in which this has occurred over the past few years. As you can see, the changes have been simply enormous!
