They give people enjoyment, an opportunity to socialise online, and a fun hobby to look forward to. As the world develops, so do video games. Every year, more and more video games are developed and released, each with better graphics and gameplay than its predecessor. The popularity of video games was really due to the fanbases of video game franchises. These game series keep people anticipating the next release and what new features the game will include. So, what are the biggest game franchises in the world?

Call of Duty

This realistic first-person shooter was first introduced to gamers in 2003 and has remained the top dog in its genre ever since. Despite some stiff competition from the likes of Halo and Battlefield, Call of Duty continues to dominate the gaming market.

Pokémon

Created in the mid-1990s, Pokémon really captured the imagination of people all across the world. Since its creation, there have been multiple individual video games, a television series, and a very popular card game. The video games alone have sold over 300 million units in the past 25 years.

Super Mario/Mario Kart

Perhaps the most recognisable video game character of all time, the Mario franchise is the most popular game franchise of all time. It has sold over 529 million units over the franchise’s history. Gamers were first introduced to Mario in 1981, when he featured in Donkey Kong. It was two years until he would get his main character slot in Mario Bros, alongside fellow character Luigi.

FIFA

The most popular sport in the world has been beautifully captured by EA Sports in the video game franchise FIFA. Since its introduction in 1993, it has dominated the esports market. The game is released annually, and sells over 10 million copies on average per annum.

Grand Theft Auto

The, at times controversial, game franchise that is Grand Theft Auto has been hugely successful since its introduction in the like 90s. The crime simulator has notched up well over 250 million copies worldwide.

The Sims

Another feature from Electronic Arts (EA) is this life simulator game. The game was originally introduced to PC players, but is now compatible with console users. There have been four main releases from the Sims franchise, with several spin-off games also.

Lego

Lego really made their name in the gaming industry by giving movie fans the opportunity to play as their favourite characters. Many popular film franchises have been adapted into playable video games thanks to Lego. The likes of Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Marvel are just some of the examples of Lego adaptations. The franchise has sold over 100 million copies worldwide.

Minecraft

Minecraft really took the world by storm when it was introduced to the public in 2011. The game was made by Swedish developers and currently stands as the best-selling single game of all time, selling over 140 million units. The Minecraft franchise is rumoured to be worth around $2.5 billion.
